Il y a 20 ans, lorsque la Yougoslavie a commencé à se désagréger en raison de nombreux conflits armés, le monde entier considérait les Balkans comme une poudrière. Alors que l’Occident proclamait la fin de l’histoire , les Balkans sombraient de plus en plus dans les ténèbres de l’antagonisme ancien et de la nervosité ethno-nationaliste. Outre les images de camps de concentration, de villes détruites et de colonies en fuite, le spectre de la balkanisation faisait désormais son apparition. La désintégration de la Yougoslavie a réveillé beaucoup de gens en Occident de leurs rêves d’un paradis après la guerre froide, et les Balkans sont devenus le symbole négatif et laid des attentes trahies. Dans la plupart des cas, les Balkans ne sont pas définis par les caractéristiques de l’identité personnelle, mais comme un lieu de conflit permanent.
