Książka ta dotyczy poli(tereftalanu etylenu), zwanego zazwyczaj PET, oraz procesów chemicznych mających na celu poprawę jego właściwości hydrofilowych. Hydrofilowość jest wymagana głównie w prawie wszystkich formalnych i codziennych ubraniach tekstylnych, jednak oryginalny poliester nie posiada tej ważnej właściwości. Dlatego też, w celu poprawy właściwości hydrofilowych, konieczne jest poddanie poliestrowych podłoży tekstylnych obróbce przy użyciu nieszkodliwych środków chemicznych. W związku z tym również w tym przypadku PET został poddany obróbce alkoholem poliwinylowym (PVA) w środowisku alkalicznym. Dzięki tej obróbce PET zmienia swoje właściwości z hydrofobowych na hydrofilowe. PET poddany obróbce PVA wykazuje bardzo dobrą absorpcję wody i właściwości odprowadzania wilgoci, co prowadzi do poprawy właściwości barwienia. Dlatego też materiały tekstylne PET poddane obróbce PVA mogą być bardzo przydatne w wielu rodzajach odzieży codziennego użytku i podobnych zastosowaniach odpowiednich dla użytkowników końcowych.
