W ostatnich trendach wideo przekazuje całą sieć rozległą poprzez strumieniową łączność opartą na protokole IP. W przeszłości ludzie słuchali audycji radiowych i oglądali programy telewizyjne. Korzystali z sieci telefonicznej, aby komunikować się interaktywnie z innymi osobami. Obecnie jednak chcą korzystać z Internetu nie tylko do komunikacji tekstowej i obrazowej, ale także do usług audio i wideo. Najważniejszym elementem tej usługi jest transmisja głosu lub obrazu, która odbywa się za pomocą protokołu Voice over Internet Protocol. Transmisja głosu przez VoIP jest zatem lepsza w przypadku WiMAX. Jednak w wysoko rozwiniętych obszarach wykorzystuje się wyłącznie WiFi. Ponieważ WiFi jest technologią bezprzewodową i ma wiele zalet, liczba użytkowników stacjonarnych i mobilnych w danym obszarze zasięgu również rośnie. Użytkownicy poruszający się pieszo mają częstszy dostęp do sieci niż użytkownicy poruszający się pojazdami, zwłaszcza pociągami. Wynika to z ograniczonego zasięgu sieci. Dlatego bardzo ważne jest zwiększenie zasięgu sieci na większych odległościach. Rozwiązaniem tego problemu jest integracja WiMAX i WiFi.
