Spektroskopia to nauka zajmująca się badaniem oddziaływania promieniowania elektromagnetycznego z materią. Spektroskopia optyczna jest szeroko stosowana w charakteryzowaniu materiałów nanostrukturalnych i można ją ogólnie podzielić na dwa rodzaje: spektroskopię absorpcyjną i emisyjną oraz spektroskopię wibracyjną. Spośród nich spektroskopia absorpcyjna i emisyjna służy do określania struktury elektronowej atomów, jonów, cząsteczek itp. Badanie zachowania elektronów w atomach lub cząsteczkach wzbudzonych do określonego stanu wyższego z ich stanu podstawowego poprzez absorpcję fotonu o odpowiedniej energii nazywane jest spektroskopią absorpcyjną. Elektrony wzbudzone do stanów wyższych są krótkotrwałe i powracają do swojego stanu początkowego w wyniku różnych procesów. Zatem badanie zachowania takich elektronów powracających do stanu podstawowego nazywane jest spektroskopią emisyjną.
