Why I quit the Black Christian church. The cleaning crew has been showing up at some of our churches lately and finding quite a hefty load in the wash baskets. The muck under the carpets needed heavy-duty lifting, too, yes, at those other churches where a particular kind of people have been worshipping. Dirty church laundry has been piling up for too long, and now the washing crew is sparing no effort or resource in attempting to clean up the mess. Look, the wash-day clothesline is growing longer, laden heavy under the load. It’s stretching out behind the church building, but not far enough out of sight of curious passers-by and parishioners alike. Parishioners are mad as well at the whole debacle. If and when God finds out about these things, she’s going to be really upset, too. Some people are going to get what’s coming to them, not to worry about this or anything else, though. Because, as it applies to us, like you and me, everything is going to be all right, right? Yes, because... Learn all of the truth, the facts, half-truths, and other convincing (or not-so-convincing) arguments. Based on real-life stories. Born out of the experience, observations, and participation, albeit reluctantly, of these participants. Since this is directed towards addressing an issue that is particular to a certain type of people, these tiny snippets of words and phrases tend to slip in here and there, more or less like seasoning for the pot, and may be specific to this group. However, nine times out of ten, it’s just there for emphasis. If one were to lift those out, it would not affect the story at all, since the proper terms or phrases would have been there. The story is told in a richly blended language mix of poetry, Jamaican patois, nonsense talk, double entendre, and sensational spelling. Yes, wordplay is the order of the day around here. Real Jamaican yardie sin ting. Yeah man, yes, a Jamaica yaad mi cum fram. Sorry, I meant to say, I’m from Jamaica, born and bred , okay? But what we wanted was churches, more than any and everything else. So church it is. Until...

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...
