Este conto, no género policial, da autoria do mestre Arthur Conan Doyle (Sir), utiliza a narrativa na primeira pessoa.Aqui, o autor e criador do mais famoso detetive do mundo, Sherlock Holmes, conta a história de um ex-presidiário que anda de terra em terra, de albergue em albergue, em busca de um trabalho honesto para refazer a sua vida. A narrativa da história desenvolve-se através de uma carta que o B. 24 - número de presidiário da personagem central desta história - envia a um investigador em busca de apelar à sua inocência após se ter visto envolvido num crime que o leva novamente à prisão. Com o propósito de demonstrar a sua inocência, o presidiário relata a sequência de eventos que o levou à situação em que se encontra. Relatando a sua má-sorte de pernoitar numa pequena aldeia, num albergue cujo dono, um tagarela de primeira, acaba a contar-lhe a história de uma grande casa na entrada da aldeia sobre a qual consta haver grandes riquezas no seu interior. O B. 24 tenta interromper a conversa em antes de saber demasiado sobre o assunto, mas o seu instinto criminoso leva-o a indagar e a saber mais e mais sobre a história da casa e dos seus residentes, inevitavelmente cede ao seu instinto e porfia as riquezas da casa, mas quando nela tenta entrar acaba enredado numa situação completamente inesperada que o leva à prisão.
