O município rural de Tanda, com uma estação chuvosa prolongada e atravessado pelo rio Níger, é uma zona atraente. As interações com a população indígena exercem pressões sobre a regeneração da vegetação. Para avaliar o risco de desertificação, analisámos os dados pluviométricos diários de 1931 a 2007, calculámos os índices diferenciais de vegetação (NDVI e SAVI) das imagens Landsat (1973, 1984, 1992 e 2002) e discutimos os resultados; por fim, a imagem do Google Earth é comparada com a fotografia aérea de 1975. A análise climática mostra uma variação interanual das precipitações, com alternância de períodos secos e húmidos. A comparação entre os anos 1984/1973 e 2002/1992 mostra uma tendência de diminuição dos índices de vegetação, apesar do retorno a condições mais húmidas nos anos 1992 e 2002. Entre 1992/1984 e 2002/1973, os resultados mostram um aumento dos índices de vegetação devido às precipitações dos períodos húmidos (1992 e 2002) e traduzem a dificuldade de comparar condições climáticas diferentes.
