A hipertensão arterial é uma característica, em oposição a uma doença específica, e representa um desvio quantitativo, e não qualitativo, da norma. Em pacientes hipertensos, os canais nutritivos são claramente visíveis e aparecem com mais frequência. As radiotransparências que parecem representar espaços no osso através dos quais os vasos sanguíneos e os nervos passam para abastecer as estruturas circundantes foram denominadas canais nutritivos. Os canais nutritivos também são chamados de canais interdentais, canais circulatórios, canais vasculares ou canais nutritivos interdentais. Os canais nutritivos são condutos tubulares observados no osso alveolar que contêm elementos neurovasculares que abastecem os dentes e as estruturas de suporte. Estas estruturas anatómicas são frequentemente observadas como radiolucências finas lineares, curvilíneas ou circulares situadas dentro do osso alveolar interproximal ou inferior aos ápices radiculares. Os canais nutritivos são encontrados em todos os processos alveolares maxilares e mandibulares. Os canais nutritivos aparecem com mais frequência nas radiografias intraorais da região anterior mandibular, seguidos pela área pré-molar mandibular, pela área pré-molar maxilar e pela parede do seio maxilar.
