Zapalenie przyzębia jest chorobą zapalną tkanek podporowych zębów wywołaną przez grupę specyficznych mikroorganizmów. Prowadzi do postępującej destrukcji więzadeł przyzębia i kości wyrostka zębodołowego z tworzeniem kieszonek przyzębnych lub recesji dziąseł, albo obu tych zjawisk jednocześnie. Celem leczenia periodontologicznego jest doprowadzenie do regeneracji zniszczonych przez chorobę tkanek. Regeneracja przyzębia może być zdefiniowana jako całkowite przywrócenie utraconym tkankom ich pierwotnej architektury i funkcji poprzez odtworzenie kluczowych dla ich rozwoju procesów gojenia ran, tj. wywołanie tworzenia kości, cementu i włókien więzadła przyzębia. Istnieje wiele dostępnych technik regeneracji przyzębia, w tym wykorzystanie czynników wzrostu do regeneracji przyzębia. Jednak większość z powszechnie stosowanych technik regeneracyjnych prowadzi do naprawy tkanek, a nie do ich regeneracji.
