Przeszczepy kości są stosowane w chirurgii od ponad stu lat. Jest to dynamiczny proces, szeroko stosowany w chirurgii rekonstrukcyjnej. W ciągu ostatnich dwudziestu lat nastąpił znaczny postęp w tej dziedzinie. Kość utracona w wyniku resekcji, resorpcji lub sekwestracji nie ulega regeneracji w wyniku normalnego procesu gojenia. Należy ją zatem zastąpić za pomocą alloplastyki, przeszczepów kości lub jej substytutów, transportu kości. Aby regeneracja przebiegła pomyślnie, przeszczep kości po zastosowaniu powinien się zagoić, zintegrować, ulec rewaskularyzacji i ostatecznie przyjąć pożądaną formę. Pobranie autogennego przeszczepu kości jest sposobem na przywrócenie ciągłości szczęki, który wspiera jej funkcjonowanie poprzez protezy podporowe i/lub elementy osseointegrujące, a także wytrzymuje obciążenia funkcjonalne w miarę upływu czasu. Dzięki lepszemu zrozumieniu biologii gojenia kości, regeneracji kości i przebudowy kości w połączeniu z procedurami przeszczepiania możliwe jest uzyskanie przewidywalnych, pomyślnych wyników rekonstrukcji.
