O autismo, uma perturbação do desenvolvimento neurológico com diversas etiologias, continua a atrair a atenção dos investigadores. Desabilitando a criança nas áreas da comunicação e interacção, é considerado grave e incapacitante para a vida. Numa abordagem contextual e psico-desenvolvimentista, este livro destaca a contribuição das terapias tradicionais e modernas no cuidado da criança. Utilizando uma abordagem comparativa, o autor realizou um estudo transversal de 143 crianças autistas, todas do Gabão, com idades compreendidas entre os 3 e os 10 anos, divididas em dois grupos. O primeiro grupo era composto por 75 crianças autistas, incluindo 21 raparigas e 54 rapazes, que tinham beneficiado de cuidados médico-psicológico-pedagógicos numa instituição especializada. O segundo grupo é composto por 68 crianças autistas, incluindo 28 raparigas e 40 rapazes, que beneficiaram de práticas terapêuticas tradicionais. Este livro está em linha com as novas investigações nas ciências humanas e sociais, particularmente na psicologia do desenvolvimento.
