Zahnverschleiß, ein wachsendes Problem, das durch Lebensstilfaktoren wie Zähneknirschen und sauren Reflux beeinflusst wird, kann die Mundgesundheit und die Lebensqualität beeinträchtigen. In dieser Querschnittsstudie, die über einen Zeitraum von 12 Monaten in einem staatlichen tertiären Zahnkrankenhaus in Himachal Pradesh durchgeführt wurde, sollte der Zusammenhang zwischen Zahnabnutzung und mundgesundheitsbezogener Lebensqualität (OHRQoL) untersucht werden. Insgesamt wurden 400 Teilnehmer im Alter von 12-15, 35-44 und 65-74 Jahren untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass Schmelzverschleiß am häufigsten auftrat (53,92 %), gefolgt von Dentin (35,49 %) und Zahnhalsverschleiß (2,69 %). Während 61,8 % eine leichte Abnutzung aufwiesen, hatten 7 % einen schweren Verlust. Es wurde ein signifikanter Zusammenhang zwischen dem Schweregrad der Zahnabnutzung und den zunehmenden körperlichen Schmerzen und Behinderungen festgestellt, während psychologische und soziale Aspekte weitgehend unbeeinflusst blieben. Die Studie kommt zu dem Schluss, dass leichte Abnutzung nur begrenzte Auswirkungen hat, während schwere Abnutzung die Lebensqualität beeinträchtigt. Es werden weitere multizentrische und Längsschnittstudien empfohlen, um komplexe ätiologische Faktoren und die Auswirkungen auf die Bevölkerung zu untersuchen.
