The brief was to write an overview of German-language literature from Transylvania. After some reflection, we realised that such an undertaking would be difficult to bring to a successful conclusion, at any rate not within the scope of such a brief work, for 750 years of literature cannot be summarised in a few dozen pages, unless one runs the risk of leaving out important parts of this literary history of the Transylvanian Saxons. That is when we had the idea of linking our location in Vienna to the given topic: the literary connections between Transylvania and Austria could form the central theme of this work, in all their facets. This would involve considering writers who were born in Transylvania, spent part of their lives in Austria and wrote there; then those authors who studied in Vienna or elsewhere in Austria and received important inspiration for their work there; and, conversely, authors who were born in Austria and lived in Transylvania.
