Das Buch verfolgt am Beispiel der Region Köln die Frage, inwiefern Jugendliche mit Migrationshintergrund besonders betroffen sind von Prozessen der Kriminalisierung und Ethnisierung, die letztendlich zur Inhaftierung führen. Die Kriminalitätskarrieren jugendlicher Migranten werden aus mehreren Perspektiven beleuchtet: Der gesamtgesellschaftliche Kontext, in dem Jugendliche mit Migrationshintergrund heranwachsen, wird anhand einer Beschreibung der sozialen Lage, einer Diskussion der polizeilichen Kriminalstatistiken und der Kriminalberichterstattung in den Medien verdeutlicht. Mittelpunkt der Forschung bilden Interviews mit inhaftierten Jugendlichen. In der Rekonstruktion ihrer Biografien wurden die Situationen und Interaktionen herausgearbeitet, die für die kriminelle Karriere von Bedeutung waren. Dabei wird ein Perspektivenwechsel vom problematisierten Ausländer auf Jugendliche in ihren spezifisch schwierigen Lebenslagen vorgenommen. Aus diesem Blickwinkel heraus werden dann Vorschläge für Prävention in verschiedenen Bereichen entwickelt.
