Die Studie befaßt sich auf der Basis von Lebensverlaufsdaten des Max-Planck-Instituts für Bildungsforschung mit dem langfristigen Wandel der Übergänge zwischen Schule, Berufsausbildung und Beruf in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Anhand der Ausbildungs- und Berufserfahrungen verschiedener Geburtskohorten werden sowohl Strukturveränderungen als auch Kontinuitäten im Bereich der beruflichen Bildung über einen Zeitraum von mehr als vier Jahrzehnten aufgezeigt. Die einzelnen Kapitel untersuchen die Ausbildungswege und den Arbeitsmarktzugang von Männern und Frauen aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Dabei werden u.a. die Zeitstrukturen des Übergangs in den Beruf, die Geschlechtsspezifik von Berufswünschen und die Frage des Wandels der Verberuflichung von Erwerbsmustern einer eingehenden Betrachtung unterzogen.
