Le film Cidade Mulher (1936), produit par Brasil Vita Filme, dirigé par l’actrice Carmen Santos et mis en scène par Humberto Mauro, a une bande sonore composée presque entièrement par le chanteur de samba Noel Rosa. Face à la disparition de nombreux films de cette période, comme Cidade Mulher, ce projet s’est attaché à sauver ce film qui, selon nous, comportait plusieurs éléments significatifs reflétant les enjeux sociaux et culturels de l’époque : la samba et l’œuvre de Noel Rosa, une fiction sur Rio de Janeiro, l’emblématique capitale fédérale, l’œuvre de Humberto Mauro, qui venait de connaître un grand succès avec Favela dos meus Amores (1935), et Carmen Santos, productrice enthousiaste et actrice de thèmes nationaux et populaires. Le répertoire musical était essentiel pour cette récupération et pour comprendre la relation entre l’image et le son, et l’intrigue dans sa relation avec la culture et la société dans laquelle elle est immergée.
