Obwohl Zahnärzte in der zahnmedizinischen Ausbildung das Anbringen von Inlays und Onlays erlernen, wurde festgestellt, dass viele, wenn nicht die meisten, diese Restaurationen nach Eintritt in die Praxis nicht mehr durchführen. Zumindest sorgt ihre konservative Natur im Vergleich zur Vorbereitung für vollflächige Kronen dafür, dass die Zahnstruktur für die zukünftige Verwendung „gespeichert' wird. Diese Vorteile, kombiniert mit der Haltbarkeit und Ästhetik der indirekten Komposit- oder Keramik-Inlay- oder Onlay-Restauration, sind für Patienten sehr wichtig und sollten weiterhin die Natur der restaurativen Zahnheilkunde bestimmen.
