Asterio de Ara (950-1003) narra la historia de un personaje ficticio, que vive las vicisitudes desde oblato hasta llegar a ser abad del cenobio de Sassau y su renuncia al nombramiento. Del tiempo en el que trascurre la ficción hay poco escrito. La novela se desarrolla en tres lugares: en el cenobio de san Adrián de Sásabe (Sassau), en Aruej, antiguo señorío de Aruex, cercano a Villanúa, y por último en el auténtico y antiguo camino al Locus Sancti Iacobi o Santiago de Compostela. Toda la historia está enmarcada en costumbres monacales y momentos, nombres y fechas históricas reales entre el 950, año de nacimiento del protagonista, y su fin de peregrinaje en el 1003.
