A mediados del siglo VI Francia estaba dividida en cuatro reinos, Austrasia, Neustria, Borgoña y el reino de Paris. El destino ha querido que los hermanos Bertrand, Raúl y Gisela, aparezcan en la ciudad de Metz, en una época que no es la suya y en medio de una guerra fraticida entre los reyes Sigeberto y Childerico, instigados por el odio irracional que se profesan las reinas consortes Brunequilda y Fredegunda.
