Esta dissertação intitulada Ascensão e difusão do inglês na Índia britânica examinou a história da ascensão e difusão do inglês na Índia britânica a partir de uma perspetiva indiana. A releitura fornecerá o cenário atual do inglês como matéria de estudo na Índia independente. Muitas mudanças foram testemunhadas desde o dia em que foi introduzido na Índia devido à aceitação do Macaulayan Minute on Education (1835). Macaulay favoreceu a introdução do inglês na Índia apenas porque os britânicos precisavam de funcionários para a administração e mediadores para executar as suas ordens na Índia Britânica. Tomando o Macaulay’s Minutes on Education (1835) como fonte primária, esta dissertação compara-o criticamente com as tendências que surgiram gradualmente no campo dos estudos de inglês na Índia pós-independência. A releitura de Macaulay a Viswanathan e Alan Durant produzirá uma ligação através da qual podemos facilmente conectar as mudanças ocorridas no campo do inglês na Índia, desde a sua área muito limitada de Literatura Inglesa até à área nova e emergente de Estudos Ingleses, sem quaisquer fronteiras e limitações fixas.
