Nos últimos trinta anos, aproximadamente, a manutenção da paz sofreu grandes transformações, sem dúvida motivadas por realidades em constante mudança. Em muitos aspectos, o continente africano é um laboratório para o processo dinâmico de adaptação das operações de manutenção da paz aos constrangimentos contemporâneos e, consequentemente, para a metamorfose dos princípios cardeais da manutenção da paz das Nações Unidas. Tendo em conta a dificuldade de determinar a sua natureza atual, o presente estudo adopta uma abordagem cautelosa e classifica-as como estando no meio. Na realidade, as necessidades da luta contra o terrorismo empurraram-nos para uma categoria quase translúcida, numa fronteira jurídica particularmente ténue, difícil de perceber, mas bem visível no fundo. Daí a tese do continuum de reforço e metamorfose dos princípios cardinais da manutenção da paz desenvolvida no presente documento. Será de interesse para os investigadores, peritos e profissionais da manutenção da paz, bem como para os estudantes de direito internacional e de relações internacionais.
