A literatura demonstra que o teatro improvisado tem demonstrado promover o desenvolvimento da confiança entre os participantes, neste caso, um terapeuta e um paciente, de uma forma que as técnicas convencionais nem sempre são capazes (Ringstrom, 2001). Este livro apresenta uma história do teatro improvisado, bem como uma visão geral de como essas habilidades podem ser incorporadas ao trabalho dos profissionais de saúde mental, especificamente relacionadas à escuta ativa e ao envolvimento criativo, que inclui os conceitos de brincadeira, espontaneidade e criatividade. A crença de Carl Rogers (1961) de que três condições são necessárias para o estabelecimento de uma relação de ajuda: congruência, consideração/aceitação positiva incondicional e compreensão empática está intimamente relacionada com os princípios básicos do teatro improvisado. Assim, este livro fornece uma boa estrutura para compreender melhor a interseção entre a psicoterapia e as competências e técnicas do teatro improvisado e como os profissionais de saúde mental podem começar a aprimorar as suas competências através do uso de técnicas e competências do teatro improvisado.
