O Homem, desde o momento em que dominou o espaço circundante, teve como uma de suas atividades a nomeação. A partir de então, o ser humano passou a nomear tanto as pessoas, os objetos, quanto os lugares. O ato de nomear é, pois, arbitrário. Neste processo, o homem identifica semelhanças e diferenças com as quais estrutura o mundo que o cerca. Entretanto, esta apropriação do real através da nomeação ocorre a partir de circunstâncias históricas, variáveis culturais e anseios espirituais, sendo a primeira etapa para o conhecimento científico do mundo. A literatura possibilita a recriação da realidade. O escritor Jorge Amado, ao escrever o romance Terras do sem fim, no qual tematiza a conquista do espaço geográfico da região sul da Bahia, mostra como as cidades foram dominadas e nomeadas. A criação das vilas e povoados foi marcada pela posse das terras que serviam para o cultivo do cacau e, deste modo, Jorge Amado une literatura e geografia para, entre outras coisas, apresentar ao leitor como os topônimos podem ser estudados em várias perspectivas.
