Die Ereignisse der Handlung brechen mit solcher Macht in die beschauliche Welt von Fridolin und Albertine ein, dass es auch dem Leser schwindelig wird. Nicht nur in der `Maskenball-Szene´ fragt man sich, ob Irrsinn oder Traum das Geschehen bestimmen. Der Klappentext der Ausgabe des S.Fischer Verlages spricht gar davon, die Traumnovelle 'entzieht sich der Analyse; sie ist unausdeutbar'. Dies trifft wohl zu, eine alles umfassende und von allen geteilte Interpretation wird es wohl nicht geben - aber viele Elemente können doch für sich genommen untersucht werden und zu einem (obgleich unvollständigen) Gesamtbild gefügt werden.
