Os poluentes orgânicos persistentes (POP) são substâncias químicas tóxicas que afectam negativamente a saúde do biota em todo o mundo. Podem ser transportados e gerados de um país para outro pelo vento e pela água e acumular-se no ecossistema. Quase diariamente, os meios de comunicação social publicam relatórios alarmantes sobre as situações perigosas que provocam a ameaça dos POP no nosso ambiente. Estes problemas só podem ser resolvidos através da compreensão dos conhecimentos sólidos sobre os efeitos nocivos destes xenobióticos no ambiente e, por sua vez, da adoção de uma abordagem adequada e eficaz. O objetivo deste livro é analisar o perfil de contaminação por insecticidas do sedimento do leito associado ao sistema estuarino de Cochin, Kerala, Índia.
