A explosão demográfica dos países em desenvolvimento em todo o mundo está a criar uma procura sem precedentes de uma maior produção de cereais alimentares. Nos países em desenvolvimento, os cereais e as leguminosas são produzidos principalmente em pequenas explorações agrícolas. Os agricultores retêm parte da colheita para consumo próprio, acabando por vender o restante à população urbana. A preservação da qualidade dos cereais a nível das explorações agrícolas é, por conseguinte, de grande importância. No entanto, esta é uma tarefa difícil, particularmente nas zonas tropicais e subtropicais onde as tecnologias de secagem e armazenamento são deficientes ou completamente inexistentes. Os insectos e os fungos que atacam os grãos armazenados causam graves perdas quantitativas e qualitativas, que têm sérias implicações para a disponibilidade de alimentos, especialmente nas zonas do mundo onde o armazenamento de grãos é mal gerido devido à falta de conhecimentos e tecnologias adequados. Para evitar perdas excessivas de qualidade e quantidade durante o armazenamento de cereais, as práticas de secagem artificial e de arejamento por arrefecimento, ou a utilização de insecticidas, são as técnicas mais utilizadas pelos países que as podem pagar. Os países em desenvolvimento, no entanto, recorreram principalmente à utilização de insecticidas.
