La géophagie, una forma di pica, è il consumo di solidi argillosi, particolarmente diffuso tra le donne enceinte di Lubumbashi. Uno studio condotto su 450 donne ha evidenziato una prevalenza del 68%, con un consumo prevalente di caolino (81%), proveniente da diverse regioni.L’analisi organolettica ha messo in evidenza le caratteristiche distintive dei suoli consumati, mentre gli esami fisico-chimici hanno rivelato la presenza di elementi chimici come SiO₂, Al₂O₃, Fe₂O₃, TiO₂ e K₂O, oltre che di metalli solidi (As, Cd, Pb, Ni) e di sostanze uranifere. La capacità di scambio cationico variava da 21,4 a 31,0 méq/100 g, e i suoli erano acidi a seconda del loro pH.Questo studio ha messo in luce il carattere di corteggiamento della geofagia a Lubumbashi, indipendentemente dalle condizioni sociali. Offre prospettive per la messa a punto di metodi di decontaminazione, al fine di sfruttare questi argili in farmacia, senza rischi per la salute.
