Ein Hauptgrund für das „Wiederaufleben' der Area Studies sind vielfältige Globalisierungsprozesse innerhalb derer genaue Kenntnisse lokaler, regionaler sowie transnationaler und transkultureller Beziehungen an Bedeutung gewinnen. Wesentliche Vorstellungen des Zusammenhangs von Raum und Kultur werden hinterfragt und zugleich Grenzen und Räume im wechselseitigen Verhältnis zwischen dem Globalen und dem Lokalen „reterritorialisiert'. Dies hat wiederum Auswirkungen auf die Wissenschaft wo sich das Verhältnis von Fachdisziplinen und Area Studies und die Weiterentwicklung von interdisziplinären Arbeitsformen verändert. „Even if still a debated domain, the extraordinary growth and worldwide coverage of Area Studies scholarship and teaching in the US has no equivalent elsewhere in the world. Paris and London have gathered numerous intellectuals from other parts of the globe, and many European universities have, or have had, comoarable centers or programs, but they are mostly focused on their colonial or ex-colonial possessions. (...) Only the US has numerous universities with multiple Area Studies Centers, Institutes, and Programs dealing simultaneously with several regions of the world.' Dieses Zitat soll ein Stück weit den Fokus der folgenden Arbeit verdeutlichen. In Abgrenzung zur Auseinandersetzung mit Entwicklung und Synthese der Area Studies in Deutschland, soll es in dieser Arbeit stellenweise auch um die für den deutschsprachigen Raum durchaus interessanten amerikanischen Entwicklungen bezüglich dieses Themas gehen.
