Wissenschaftliche Experimente zeichnen sich dadurch aus, dass sie wiederholt werden können, möglicherweise unter Änderung der Parameter. In diesem Sinne erfordert die Wiederverwendung wissenschaftlicher Arbeit einen Mechanismus, der ihre Reproduktion unter Vermeidung von Verzögerungen oder Fehlern gewährleistet [Brock et al. 1997]. Workflows sind eine interessante Möglichkeit zur Optimierung der Prozesskoordination [Sheth, Georgakopoulos und Hornick 1995]. Workflows werden derzeit im wissenschaftlichen Umfeld eingesetzt, bekannt als Scientific Workflows, und werden in Verbindung mit wiederverwendbaren Prozessen zur gemeinsamen Nutzung wissenschaftlicher Experimente verwendet. Die derzeit angebotenen Lösungen sind jedoch zu komplex, um auf einfache Aufgaben oder Arbeiten in bestimmten Forschungsbereichen angewendet zu werden. Um diese Unzulänglichkeiten zu beheben, wird in diesem Projekt ein frei verteiltes Workflow-Tool mit Open-Source-Code angepasst, um nicht nur Webdienste, sondern auch Softwarekomponenten zu koordinieren, die dem DCC-Modell (Digital Content Component) folgen [Santanchè 2006]. Der Anwendungsbereich des entstehenden Systems wird sich auf die gemeinsame Nutzung wissenschaftlicher Experimente beziehen.
