دکتر هارون پیكریان، دندانپزشک متفکر و فیلسوف و نوه خاخام هیلل از رهبران مذهبی جامعه یهودیان یزد، در اواخر زمستان سال 1305 شمشی (1927میلادی ) در شهر کویری یزد، واقع درمرکز ایران، چشم به جهان گشود.در آن زمان مردم ایران از عواقب وخیم، ویرانگر و مرگبار شیوع انواع اپیدمی ها ،قحطی ها، فقر و جنگ های داخلی و جنگ جهانی اول و تاخت و تازهای اروپایی ها در رنج بسیاری بودند. همچنین از فضای بی ثباتی دولت و سقوط دودمان قاجار و آغاز پادشاهی دودمان پهلوی در نا امنی به سر می بردند.اعراف بازتابی است از زندگی جامعه اقلیت یهودیان هم عصر نویسنده در شهرهای یزد و تهران، و منعکس کننده ناله ها و زجر و عذابی است که نتیجه یهودی ستیزی مسلمانان در شهرهای یزد وتهران و سایر نقاط ایران بوده استاز زمانی که اسلام شیعه توسط شاهان صفوی به رسمیت شناخته شد، اتیکت نجاست را به سینه یهودیان و سایر اقلیت های مذهبی چسباندند واز آن به بعد وضعیت یهودیان در ایران بدتر و بدتر شد زیرا دائماً مورد آزار و اذیت مسلمانان قرار می گرفتند. این وضعیت در دوره قاجار به اوج خود رسید تا جایی که با یهودیان مانند موجوداتی کثیف و نکبتبار رفتار می کردند و غارت اموال و کشتن آنها را مجاز و ثواب می شمردند. در نتیجه، زندگی آنان به جهنمی تبدیل شده و بسیاری از ایشان یا کشته شدند یا به اجبار به اسلام ‌گرویدند یا یهودیت خود را در خفا حفظ کردند. می توان گفت که به قدرت رسیدن خاندان پهلوی نقطه عطف مثبتی بود که رفاه و آسایش نسبی یهودیان ایران را در پی داشت.درباره تاریخ یهودیان ایران در قرون اخیر بسیار نوشته شده است. هدف نویسنده از نوشتن این کتاب به عنوان یک یهودی ایرانی و به عنوان یک شاهد ، محقق و مستند نویسِ واقعیت های تاریخی معاصر، تنها ارائه بی طرفانه واقعیت های تاریخی بوده، دقیقا همان گونه که خود تجربه کرده، دیده و شنیده است. دیانا پیکریاننویسنده یکی از شخصیت‌های فاضل جامعه یهودی میباشد که با قلم شیوا و ساده خود حقایقی را که با چشم خود دیده به رشتۀ تحریر در آورده است. خواندن خاطرات و شواهد این کتاب مرا به دوران کودکی‌ام سوق داد و در بعضی صفحات، انسان چنان دستخوش احساسات قرار می‌گیرد که بی‌اختیار به گریه می‌افتد و با خود می‌اندیشد: ای انسان والا که خود را اشرف مخلوقات می‌دانی! آیا سزای یک قوم سرگردان و نجیب که در زمرۀ اولین مردم خداپرست این جهان بوده ‎اند این است که در این جهان پهناور دچار بی‌حرمتی و بی‌مهری شوند و در معرض زجر و شکنجه و شقا وت قرار بگیرند؟ ... فریدون اخووت
