Tras casi veinticuatro años de ocupación por parte de Indonesia, Timor Oriental fue escenario de una violencia sistemática y generalizada, que se desencadenó a raíz del referendo por la independencia promovido por la ONU en 1999. Como mecanismo para acallar las pretensiones independentistas de los timorenses orientales, las fuerzas armadas indonesias y las milicias integracionistas sembraron el terror en este territorio. Partiendo de las investigaciones adelantadas por el Equipo Forense de Serious Crimes Investigation Team (SCIT) de la United Nations Mission in Timor (UNMIT) entre los años 2010 y 2013, esta obra relata los aportes de la antropología forense en los procesos de búsqueda, análisis e identificación de crímenes de lesa humanidad. 10
