Apologia: Four Letters To A Minister Of An Independent Church, By A Minister Of The Church Of England (1784) is a book written by John Newton, a prominent figure in the evangelical movement of the eighteenth century. The book is a collection of four letters that Newton wrote to a minister of an independent church, in which he defends the Church of England against the criticisms of dissenters. In the first letter, Newton argues that the Church of England is a legitimate and biblical institution, founded on the principles of the apostles and the early church fathers. He defends the use of liturgy and the Book of Common Prayer, and asserts that the Anglican Church is not a mere human invention, but a divinely ordained institution. In the second letter, Newton responds to the dissenters’ objections to the use of the Book of Common Prayer, and defends the use of set forms of worship as a means of promoting unity and reverence in the church. In the third letter, Newton addresses the dissenters’ objections to the Anglican doctrine of baptismal regeneration, and argues that baptism is a sacrament that conveys grace to the recipient, in accordance with the teachings of the New Testament. Finally, in the fourth letter, Newton defends the Church of England against the charge of being a persecuting institution, and argues that the church has always been a defender of religious liberty and the rights of conscience.Throughout the book, Newton displays a deep knowledge of biblical theology and church history, and argues his case with clarity and conviction. The book is an important historical document that sheds light on the debates and controversies that surrounded the Church of England in the eighteenth century, and it remains a valuable resource for students of church history and theology today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
