Die Bergbauindustrie benötigt mehr Zeit (bis zu mehreren Jahrzehnten) von der Prospektion bis zur Ausbeutung und umfasst viele Vorgänge, darunter Landbesitz, Exploration, Bohrlochdatenmanagement, Volumenberechnung, Planung, Produktion, Standortauswahl für Deponien und Abraum, Transport, Sicherheit usw. Aufgrund der Fortschritte in der Computerindustrie und der Informationstechnologie sowie der Weiterentwicklung geografischer Informationssysteme strebt die Welt eine Automatisierung der Bergbauindustrie an, um viele traditionelle Vorgänge zu überwinden, die zeitaufwändig und fehleranfällig sind. Daher ist es das Ziel dieses Buches, das Potenzial des Einsatzes von GIS im ägyptischen Tagebau zu bewerten. Zwei Fallstudien wurden ausgewählt, um verschiedene Arbeitsabläufe zu untersuchen. Die erste Fallstudie konzentrierte sich auf Phosphaterzvorkommen in der Region Um Salamah, El-Sibaiyyah, Ost-Niltal, Ägypten. Die zweite Fallstudie konzentrierte sich auf die Eisenerzvorkommen in El-Gedida in der Oase El-Baharia, Westliche Wüste, Ägypten.
