'Anubi' è il nome greco del dio della morte, la mummificazione, imbalsamazione, l’aldilà, i cimiteri, le tombe e gli inferi, nell’antica religione egizia, di solito raffiguratio come un cane o un uomo con una testa canina. Gli archeologi hanno identificato l’animale sacro di Anubi come un canide egizio, il lupo dorato africano. Il lupo africano era precedentemente chiamato ' sciacallo dorato africano ', fino a quando un’analisi genetica del 2015 ha aggiornato la tassonomia e il nome comune della specie. Di conseguenza, si fa spesso riferimento ad Anubi come avente una testa di 'sciacallo', ma questo 'Dio sciacallo' è ora più propriamente chiamato 'Dio cane'.
