L’antisemitismo e l’antigiudaismo, due fenomeni poliedrici, multiformi ed in continua evoluzione, hanno accompagnato la storia del popolo ebraico fin dall’antichità e stanno pericolosamente riemergendo nella stessa epoca contemporanea. La persistenza del pregiudizio antiebraico attraverso le diverse epoche testimonia la profondità delle radici del fenomeno all’interno dell’evoluzione storica della civiltà occidentale. Questo testo tenta, seppure nella consapevolezza della difficoltà insita nel processo di ricostruzione di un fenomeno complesso e cangiante quale quello dell’antisemitismo, di narrarne la storia e l’evoluzione. Le radici del pregiudizio antiebraico, in ultima analisi, rimandano alla genesi stessa della civiltà occidentale dal punto di vista strettamente religioso, sociale e culturale. La dialettica del rapporto tra identità ed alterità nell’evoluzione della storia occidentale rappresenta infatti la 'grammatica' sottesa della retorica antisemita. Il popolo ebraico per secoli ha infatti rappresentato l’alterità interna alla società occidentale, un’alterità impossibile da assimilare e per questo ritenuta intrinsecamente pericolosa. L’Occidente per secoli ha deumanizzato il popolo ebraico, ai cui membri venne imposta e sovrapposta una sorta di 'maschera di ferro' che li ritraeva come sub-umani moralmente deprecabili, dediti a cospirazioni e a pratiche occulte. Questa 'maschera di ferro', che simboleggia il carattere del discorso antisemita sia medievale che moderno, imprigionerà il popolo ebraico per l’intero XX secolo fino al tragico ed ignobile epilogo della Shoah.
