Parodontitis und Periimplantitis sind entzündliche Erkrankungen, die durch die Zerstörung des parodontalen bzw. periimplantären Gewebes gekennzeichnet sind und in erster Linie durch eine mikrobielle Dysbiose verursacht werden.Herkömmliche Behandlungen umfassen häufig ein mechanisches Debridement, das durch Antibiotika ergänzt wird. Die Besorgnis über Antibiotikaresistenzen hat jedoch zur Erforschung alternativer Therapien wie der antimikrobiellen photodynamischen Therapie (aPDT) geführt.Bei der aPDT wird ein Photosensibilisator verwendet, in der Regel ein Farbstoff oder eine lichtaktivierte Verbindung, die bei Bestrahlung mit Licht einer bestimmten Wellenlänge reaktive Sauerstoffspezies (ROS) erzeugt. Diese ROS schädigen die bakteriellen Zellmembranen, Proteine und die DNA, was zum Absterben der Mikroorganismen führt.
