Edición revisada, actualizada y ampliada por Amelia Herrera Lavanchy. Este texto fue publicado originalmente en 1983, inaugurando una Serie de Textos Educacionales de Historia Universal. Las lecciones que recoge son presentadas con la síntesis que da la experiencia de un académico que, a lo largo de generaciones, formó a profesores de la disciplina, como lo fue Héctor Herrera Cajas (1930-1997). El mismo autor escribía en la presentación de la primera edición: “Recoger lo más valioso de las tradiciones culturales que conforman nuestro presente, es una tarea humanista en el más exacto sentido del término (…) el estudio de la historia no es tanto para obtener conocimientos de personajes olvidados y situaciones pretéritas, como para forjar una actitud histórica que anime a asumir la responsabilidad inherente a la condición humana”. 10
