È noto che l’ansia e la depressione hanno un’ampia gamma di conseguenze per l’adolescente e possono fungere da precursori per lo sviluppo di disturbi alimentari. Un terzo dei giovani affetti da obesità che si rivolgono a un centro di cura presenta già disturbi alimentari e si stima che l’80% di questi giovani presenterà ansia per tutta la vita. La comorbilità tra depressione e disturbi alimentari è quindi ben consolidata. Inoltre, è stato dimostrato che la presenza di sintomi depressivi elevati nell’obesità predice la comparsa di altri disturbi alimentari, tra cui il disturbo da bulimia o il sintomo dell’abbuffata. La presenza di questi fattori interferisce nel trattamento dell’obesità infantile e adolescenziale e la loro identificazione può contribuire a migliorare l’adesione ad abitudini di vita sane e, con essa, la prevenzione delle complicanze associate all’obesità. Il trattamento dell’obesità infantile e adolescenziale è una priorità medica e sociale per le ripercussioni fisiche e psicologiche che comporta e per il carico assistenziale che comporta per i servizi sanitari.
