L’objectif principal de cet ouvrage est de servir de guide pratique pour l’utilisation de l’anesthésie locale en odontologie. Avant d’aborder les questions pratiques, il est important d’acquérir une compréhension de base de la pharmacologie et de l’anatomie de l’anesthésie locale dentaire. L’anesthésie est définie comme une perte de sensation dans une zone circonscrite du corps par une dépression de l’excitation dans les terminaisons nerveuses ou une inhibition du processus de conduction dans les nerfs périphériques. Cette définition englobe toutes les sensations. En dentisterie, c’est la sensation de douleur que nous voulons éliminer. La perte de la sensation de douleur est appelée analgésie. Les termes anesthésie locale et analgésie locale sont presque synonymes dans la pratique dentaire. Étant donné qu’une véritable anesthésie peut parfois être produite à la suite d’une injection intra-orale, c’est le premier terme qui est utilisé dans cet ouvrage.
