Este libro fue originalmente publicado en inglés por la editorial Cambridge University Press (2001) y en castellano por la Editorial Universitaria ese mismo año. En esta actualizada versión el autor busca definir el significado de la obra de Bello para la historia moderna de América Latina. Pese a ser uno de los intelectuales y estadistas más reconocidos de la historia hispanoamericana, y a la existencia de numerosas biografías y estudios sobre prácticamente cada aspecto de su obra, hacía falta una evaluación académica del significado y coherencia de la tarea intelectual de Bello. El autor se ha propuesto tres objetivos principales: identificar nueva información sobre Andrés Bello, como también utilizar fuentes manuscritas de y sobre él que los biógrafos anteriores no tuvieron oportunidad de ver o no detectaron; enfatizar las dimensiones personales de Bello y los sucesos que influyeron en una de las trayectorias intelectuales más impresionantes del siglo diecinueve; y delinear el papel central que jugó Andrés Bello en el proceso de construcción de los Estados nacionales, constituyendo de este modo un estudio biográfico moderno.
