Andrea Mantegna wurde 1431 bei Padua geboren. Seine Ausbildung zum Maler verdankt er der Schule von Padua, deren bedeutendste Vertreter Donatello (etwa 1386 bis 1466) und Paolo Uccello (etwa 1397 bis 1475) waren. Bereits in jungenJahren wurden ihm zahlreiche Aufträge anvertraut, darunter u.a. die Ovetari-Fresken der Eremitani-Kapelle in Padua (1448-1457).Schon bald erwies er sich, vor allem durch seine raffinierten perspektivischen Effekte, als großer Neuerer. Seine Heirat mit Nicolosia Bellini, Schwester von Giovanni (etwa 1430 bis 1516), öffnete ihm Venedigs Tore. Mit dem Hochaltar von San Zeno in Verona, der zu seinen Hauptwerken zählt, erreichte er seine künstlerische Reife. Danach folgte er einem Ruf nach Mantua als Hofmaler der Gonzaga, einer humanistisch gesinnten Markgrafenfamilie. Trotz seiner Bekanntschaft mit Bellini und Leonardo da Vinci (1452 bis 1519) weigerte sich Mantegna, deren innovative Farbtechnik zu übernehmen und behielt seine grafische Präzision bei. Als sein bedeutendstes Kunstwerk gilt die Camera degli Sposi im herzoglichen Palast zu Mantua.
