Desde o ano 2000, as cidades da África Subsariana estão a passar por um processo de metropolização marcado pela expansão urbana e pelo aumento da concentração humana, o que coloca grandes desafios à mobilidade. Para responder a estes desafios, as autoridades públicas iniciaram políticas de desenvolvimento de infra-estruturas rodoviárias. Entre 2010 e 2018, 810 km de estradas foram melhoradas no Distrito Autónomo da Grande Lomé. No entanto, os ciclistas são pouco representados e marginalizados durante este trabalho. Este estudo tem como objetivo compreender as razões para a baixa utilização de bicicletas nesta metrópole e propor estratégias para melhorar este modo de transporte suave. A metodologia combina uma revisão da literatura sobre mobilidade ciclável e análises de campo baseadas em observações, inquéritos e entrevistas. Os principais obstáculos identificados foram o calor opressivo, as longas distâncias entre o centro da cidade e os subúrbios, a perceção negativa da bicicleta e a falta de ciclovias. Atualmente, 99,37% das ruas do aglomerado urbano não têm ciclovias e as que existem são frequentemente intransitáveis.
