Dieses Buch konzentrierte sich auf die Geschichte Nigerias vom Tod des Mungo Parks in der Nähe von Bussa im Jahr 1806 bis zum Ende des Jahrhunderts und der Unabhängigkeit Nigerias. Es besteht ein anhaltendes Interesse britischer Entdecker, Anti-Sklaverei-Aktivisten, Missionare und Händler an Nigeria. 1821 finanzierte die britische Regierung eine Expedition nach Süden durch die Sahara, um das Königreich Bornu zu erreichen. Ihre Mitglieder erreichten 1823 als erste Europäer den Tschadsee. Eine der Gruppen, Hugh Clapperton, erkundet weiter westlich durch Kano und das Hausa-Gebiet, um Sokoto zu erreichen. Clapperton ist nur für einige Monate, im Jahr 1825, wieder in England, bevor er sich erneut auf den Weg zur nigerianischen Küste bei Lagos macht. Auf dieser Expedition mit seinem Diener Richard Lander schließlich konzentrierte sich das Buch auf verschiedene Ereignisse in der Geschichte Nigerias bis zur Zeit der Unabhängigkeit im Jahr 1960.
