Bei einem Prozess entsteht durch die Verbrennung von Brennstoffen oder chemische Reaktionen Abwärme, die anschließend in die Umwelt abgegeben wird. Diese Abwärme könnte jedoch für nützliche und wirtschaftliche Zwecke wiederverwendet werden. Eine große Menge heißer Rauchgase entsteht in Kesseln, Öfen, Verbrennungsmotoren usw. Wenn ein Teil dieser Abwärme zurückgewonnen werden könnte, ließe sich eine beträchtliche Menge an Primärbrennstoff einsparen. Die in den Abgasen verlorene Energie kann nicht vollständig zurückgewonnen werden. Durch bestimmte Maßnahmen wie EGR und Dampfabsorptionssysteme könnte jedoch ein Großteil der Wärme zurückgewonnen und Verluste minimiert werden.
