Pole gazowe Mari było pierwotnie własnością Pakistan Stanvac Petroleum Project, spółki joint venture utworzonej w 1954 r. przez rząd Pakistanu i M/s Esso Eastern Incorporated, posiadającej odpowiednio 49% i 51% udziałów. Pierwsze odkrycie gazu zostało dokonane przez Joint Venture w 1957 r., kiedy to wykonano pierwszy odwiert w niższej formacji wapienia Kirthar „Zone-B'. Produkcja ze złoża rozpoczęła się w 1967 roku. Pakistan zaspokaja około 18% swojego zapotrzebowania na ropę z lokalnych źródeł. Lokalna produkcja gazu wynosi 4 miliardy stóp sześciennych dziennie (bcfd), a produkcja ropy wynosi 37 000 baryłek w porównaniu z zapotrzebowaniem na 9-10 bcfd gazu i 77 000 bpd ropy. Bez wątpienia mamy do czynienia z nadwyżką popytu, która utrzyma się w przyszłości. Dodatkowo rząd rozważa różne opcje importu gazu z Turkmenistanu i Kataru oraz importu LNG, aby poradzić sobie ze wzrostem popytu.
