Konsep genre selalu dikaitkan dengan program-program di televisyen dan juga filem-filem yang ditayangkan di pawagam. Setiap program akan melalui satu proses pengkategorian yang mana ia mampu membezakan setiap program yang dihasilkan. Jane Feuer membincangkan bagaimana cara sesebuah literasi itu dibahagikan kepada komedi, tragedi, dan melodrama, dan Feuer mencadangkan filem - filem di Hollywood itu boleh dibahagikan kepada Westerns, Muzik dan filem seram manakala pengaturcaraan program di televisyen dapat dikategorikan ke dalam sitkom, aksi jenayah , dan soap opera (Allen, pg. 138). Pengkategorian ini penting bagi rujukan penonton supaya meraka faham latarbelakang program yang mereka tonton. Hal ini kerana, tidak semua program televisyen adalah bersesuain dengan semua peringkat umur dan jantina dikalangan penonton.
