Un protocollo Internet di nuova generazione (IPv6) sta ricevendo crescente attenzione e viene implementato in tutto il mondo. Con un indirizzo a 128 bit, offre uno spazio di indirizzamento estremamente ampio e rappresenta una grande sfida per gli algoritmi di ricerca nella tabella di routing. Questo documento fornisce al lettore un’introduzione a IPv4 e IPv6, con un confronto tra le due versioni del protocollo. Inoltre, questo lavoro spiega il protocollo DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), uno dei servizi di rete più importanti. Esso aiuta l’amministratore ad assegnare indirizzi IP dinamici e a configurarli automaticamente alle workstation client utilizzando un server DHCP centralizzato. Inoltre, questo documento si concentra sul DHCPv6, che fornisce un framework per il trasferimento delle informazioni di configurazione, tramite estensioni, ai nodi IPv6.
