Per droga si intende qualsiasi sostanza chimica in grado di indurre alterazioni fisiologiche e, se rilevante, psicologiche al momento dell’assunzione da parte di un organismo. Questa definizione distingue tipicamente le droghe da sostanze come gli alimenti che offrono principalmente un valore nutrizionale. Le droghe possono entrare nell’organismo attraverso varie vie, tra cui l’inalazione, l’iniezione, il fumo, l’ingestione, l’assorbimento tramite cerotti cutanei, la somministrazione come supposta o la dissoluzione sotto la lingua. Nel campo della farmacologia, una droga è un composto chimico, di solito con una struttura ben definita, che, somministrato a un organismo vivente, innesca una risposta biologica specifica.
