O uso de fontes renováveis de energia apresenta-se como uma das principais formas de reduzir os impactos ambientais negativos ao meio ambiente. Entre as principais fontes renováveis, destaca-se a fonte solar. O uso da energia solar térmica, para o aquecimento de água no setor residencial, apresenta atrativas viabilidades econômicas e, para incentivar o uso de tecnologias mais eficientes destes sistemas, o Programa Brasileiro de Etiquetagem - PBE/Inmetro classifica os coletores solares de classe A (mais eficientes) a classe E (menos eficientes). Diante deste contexto, o presente estudo avalia os impactos energéticos e econômicos de instalação e operação de coletores solares térmicos mais e menos eficientes, levando em conta a classificação de eficiência energética de acordo com o PBE/Inmetro. Tais análises foram realizadas para as diferentes regiões geográficas do país, já que as condições climáticas e tarifárias são diferenciadas. Os cálculos das frações solares e estimativas de energia elétrica economizadas com os coletores solares garantiram uma análise aprofundada da viabilidade econômica da implantação de cada classe de coletor.
