Foi efectuado um estudo sistemático para determinar o efeito da variação da taxa de compressão no desempenho de um motor diesel. Neste documento, os vários parâmetros de desempenho foram estudados com várias taxas de compressão e foi encontrado o valor ótimo da taxa de compressão. Com este valor, o motor apresenta o melhor rendimento e o menor consumo de combustível. Todo o estudo foi efectuado utilizando um software de simulação Diesel RK versão 4.1.3.143. Para encontrar a taxa de compressão óptima, a simulação foi efectuada com taxas de compressão que variam entre 17:1 e 21:1. Os parâmetros de desempenho considerados para a simulação são a pressão efectiva média indicada (IMEP), a eficiência indicada [1], a pressão efectiva média de travagem (BMEP), a eficiência de travagem, o consumo específico de combustível (SFC) e a temperatura dos gases de escape. São traçados os gráficos destes parâmetros em função da velocidade do motor a diferentes taxas de compressão. Os resultados mostram que o motor funciona melhor com uma taxa de compressão de 18,5 para os parâmetros acima indicados.
